There Are Monsters Everywhere tells the story of a young boy dealing with a fear of monsters. He is convinced that they are all around his house, waiting to scare him. He eventually decides to take karate classes to become brave, and strong so that the monsters do not scare him anymore. He overcomes his fear, and goes around to all the places he used to be afraid, and scares off the monsters.
This story exemplifies Mayer's theme of writing stories around common issues that children have, like being afraid of monsters. Mayer takes a positive approach in which the conflict is quickly recognized, and then the rest of the story is the main character making efforts to find the solution. Mayer's books are meant to make children feel capable of conquering any issue that they have to face in a fun and encouraging way.
