A Brief Biography of Mercer Mayer
Personal Life:
Mercer Mayer was born on December 30, 1943 in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Mayer and his family moved to Honolulu, Hawaii when he was 13 years old.
He attended the Honolulu Academy of Arts after high school, and then moved to New York City and attended the Art Students League.
Mayer now lives in New England with his wife, Gina, with whom he still writes "Little Critter" books.
Mayer says on his "Little Critter" website, that he used many of his own experiences, and those of his kids and grandkids to help inspire the subject of his books.
Career:
Mayer published his first book, A Boy, a Dog, and a Frog, in 1967.
In 1975, Mayer published his first "Little Critter" book called Just For You; these became his most recognizable works.
Mayer has written over 200 "Little Critter" books.
Mayer has currently published over 300 books.
Awards:
Mayer has won many small awards over the years for his book, but his most notable award was for
Artist of the Year in 2007 by the National Book Festival.
