The story Hiccup is a graphic novel with no words. It tells the tale of two hippos out for a romantic day on the pond, when the lady hippo gets a case of hiccups that irritates the man hippo. The story shows his various methods of trying to rid her of the hiccups. Eventually when she is finally rid of them, and their boat ride is over, he ends up with the hiccups and the lady hippo gets her turn at the tricks!
Although this story does not include any text, I still think it conveyed Mayer's writing style in that it was fantastic and humorous. Mayer often uses humor to make light of situations whether they be scary, awkward, or intimidating.
This book would be excellent to use in a 2nd or 3rd grade class in conjunction with a writing exercise. The general storyline is apparent through the images, but the students could be asked to write the words to go along. This would encourage the use of adjectives and other descriptive words so as to make their story unique.
