The Bravest Knight tells the story of what a young boy thinks life would be like a thousand years ago. He spends most of the story talking about the imaginative world he would live in as the bravest knight's squire. The story sounds romantic and fun, until the final page when the bravest knight seems to have lost to the evil Troll. This brings the boy back to reality, and he concludes with gratification that he didn't live a thousand years ago.
This book represents Mayer's works by being told from the perspective of the young protagonist. Most of Mayer's books are written in this manner. Also, this story is a fantasy as most of the narrative comes from the imagined world in the boy's head. Many of Mayer's books follow this pattern of being imagined stories by the main character.
